Helwick Lightship, Swansea Maritime Museum

My subjects are ships, harbours, and other items found at the sea's edge, these drive ideas about composition, colour and detail. Spending the last 15 summers on the Gower, I filled sketchbooks with drawings and paintings of images found in the area, my ''Helwic'' painting originated in this research. I just loved the composition of the complex details of the ship played off against the geometry of the buildings behind.

To quote Swansea Maritime Museum where the Helwick is now berthed, ''She moved to her final station, the Helwick, off the Worm's Head, for the last six years of her sea-service from 1971 to 1977. Like nearly all lightships she is not self-propelled, being towed to each station by a tug. Her diesel engines were used to generate electricity to power the light and to make compressed air to operate the foghorn''

The ship has a while series of structures supporting the light, these together with the rails, rigging and lifeboats make for a complex, almost abstract composition.

The strong forms of the ship echo the geometric forms of the buildings that make up Swansea's SA1 district.

Pete Newell talks about his paintings discussing his methodology, composition and process.

Pete's paintings are all made using good quality acrylics on professional standard linen or cotton canvases such as those by Winsor and Newton. They have warp resistant kiln-dried, bevelled solid pine stretcher bars. The canvases are archival and acid free. Each painting is varnished with appropriate acrylic varnish and simply framed by Pete. The frames are easily removed if a purchaser wishes to re-frame a painting.

The paintings on this website are all nautical or maritime in their subject matter. Pete does have paintings embracing other subjects and he can show you these using either Google Meet, Zoom or WhatsApp.

His paintings are all for sale. Selling is an interesting point for artists. Pete's belief is that "painting is communication and that to complete the creative circle one's art needs to have an audience to communicate to." The act of selling is to complete that creative circle.
