Monet's Boat

On frequent visits to the Underfall's Yard end of Bristol Harbour I had seen and drawn a shed where a beautiful, small wooden sailing boat was being built. On my last visit the boat had been put into the water in a corner of the harbour. I was struck by the lines and details of the boat played off against, and framed by, the geometry of the quayside. Whilst I was drawing this and devising a composition, I noticed several lily pads in the water near the boat. On working on larger drawings in preparation for the painting I decided that I wanted to include more lilies. I went to RHS Rosemoor to draw and make notes about the lilies in their lake. The study and inclusion of the lilies reminded me of Monet's garden, hence Monet's Boat.

The colours and forms of the lilies came from the studies that I made at RHS Rosemoor.

I found the contrasting light and shade to be found in the cockpit to be quite a challenge, especially in the handling of the ropes.

Pete Newell talks about his paintings discussing his methodology, composition and process.

Pete's paintings are all made using good quality acrylics on professional standard linen or cotton canvases such as those by Winsor and Newton. They have warp resistant kiln-dried, bevelled solid pine stretcher bars. The canvases are archival and acid free. Each painting is varnished with appropriate acrylic varnish and simply framed by Pete. The frames are easily removed if a purchaser wishes to re-frame a painting.

The paintings on this website are all nautical or maritime in their subject matter. Pete does have paintings embracing other subjects and he can show you these using either Google Meet, Zoom or WhatsApp.

His paintings are all for sale. Selling is an interesting point for artists. Pete's belief is that "painting is communication and that to complete the creative circle one's art needs to have an audience to communicate to." The act of selling is to complete that creative circle.
