Sailing Bristol Harbour
Whilst drawing around the Cottage Wharf area of Bristol harbour I could not ignore the reflections caused by the sailing boats and the surrounding buildings. After making some quick drawings and taking photos (I didn’t have much time) I worked out a composition juxtaposing the industrial and housing buildings against the reflections and details of the boats. I felt that the surroundings signifying a more industrial past helped avoid the trope of just sails and reflections.
I mostly avoid putting figures in my work, as I think that they add a distracting narrative. In this case the figures are essential and merge into the reflections and diffused light. In the case of the safety boat the figure is stock still and can be seen as one with the boat.
One of the essential details that I had to get right was the angle of the ripples radiating out across the composition. This took many hours of trial and error, a combination of sharp brush strokes, washes and colour, I think I achieved the desired result, complex while hopefully not over fussy.

Pete's paintings are all made using good quality acrylics on professional standard linen or cotton canvases such as those by Winsor and Newton. They have warp resistant kiln-dried, bevelled solid pine stretcher bars. The canvases are archival and acid free. Each painting is varnished with appropriate acrylic varnish and simply framed by Pete. The frames are easily removed if a purchaser wishes to re-frame a painting.
The paintings on this website are all nautical or maritime in their subject matter. Pete does have paintings embracing other subjects and he can show you these using either Google Meet, Zoom or WhatsApp.
His paintings are all for sale. Selling is an interesting point for artists. Pete's belief is that "painting is communication and that to complete the creative circle one's art needs to have an audience to communicate to." The act of selling is to complete that creative circle.
